How do I open up a Compaq Presario 1240 Laptop Computer?
I am trying to get at the motherboard of a Compaq 1240 Laptop. I dont want to break it, so i will ask someone who knows what they are doing. I have a big computer toolkit. Trying to upgrade the Pentium 2 Processor to something better. Even if I can't change the processor, I want to be able to see it. I don't mind tearing the thing apart as long as it doesn't break permanently.

Ok you have to take out all the screws and there is screws under a lot of plates and everything so if you see its not coming off do not force it off

i don't mean to burst your buble but proccessors in laptops are non-standard and usually permantly attached to the motherboard.

Ok, I recently inherited one of those crappy things. My screen is busted but the rest of it is intact. I tore it all apart the other day, and here's how you do it: 1) Below the keyboard, where the touchpad is, that entire assemply snaps out from the sides using a str8 screwdriver. Careful not to pull the wires out, it will still be connected, unless you unplug it. Set it aside. 2) Slide the keyboard down 1/2 an inch, and lift it out, being careful as it is also connected unless you unplug it. Set that aside too. 3) After these 2 parts are off the top, the internal parts are easy to find and replace. The v.90 modem card is under the metal plate (4 + 2 screws to remove), along with the cpu. Repeat the steps in reverse to put it back together. Simple as that. No need to take out all the bottom screws at all, and nothing has to be taken out to do it. (leave the battery/ram/etc in place) Also, to correct the previous answer, this particular laptop model does NOT have it's cpu embedded, and it can be taken out via the slide clip. I haven't tried to upgrade it, as 266 is fine for most of the apps i run on it. I'm guessing by it's old age that it wont be able to run any other cpu's except the same speed/type. I'm gonna attempt it soon.. Hope this helps, contact me for more info on that dinosaur!

The processor is soldered to the motherboard. By the way, that series is not easy by any means to work with. It takes an experienced tech about an hour to take that one apart. Compaq Laptop R4000
I just had to reinstall windows xp on my compaq laptop R4000. How do I get my wireless card to work now?
Windows didn't recognize it, and when I hit the "I" button at the top of the compaq laptop it won't turn blue. Oh, I don't have any of the restore CD's that came with it, I realize that doesn't help but there should be a way to get it to work again. The wireless card was built in to the laptop. Thanks for any help!

I had a similar problem with my compaq. Eventually I found another cd that came with it that fixed the problem after it was installed. I think it had the driver for the wireless card on it. If you don't have the cd, you might try finding a site that has the driver info to install. Try some websites like compaq or windows or the people who manufactured the wireless card. Unfortunately, I don't know how you'd find out the last one if you're computer isn't recognizing that it's there. Also, once upon a time I downloaded a printer driver from the windows website, so I'm pretty sure you could find the one you need there.

Compaq 6710b laptop
How do I get the audio on my Compaq 6710b laptop to work?
I got a used Compaq 6710b laptop from my uncle, and whenever I try to go to the control panel and go to sounds and audio devices, it says there is no audio device. I don't know what that means?

I bought a laptop that came with windows vista installed in it already, and a couple of days ago I believed I got a virus on it and it just stays on a black screen when turned on, and it erased all of my programs, how can i put Windows Vista back on it? The computer is a HP Compaq

You have to reformat the hard drive first to erase the virus. You could also plug the hard drive into another fully protected PC and run a virus scan. That done, insert the recovery disc that came with your laptop. If not, obtain an OEM edition of Windows Vista Basic and use the product key found on the sticker beneath your laptop when prompted.

Insert the Windows installation disc into your computer's DVD or CD drive. You must start Windows installation while running your existing version of Windows. 1.On the Install Windows page, click Install now. 2.On the Get important updates for installation page, we recommend getting the latest updates to help ensure a successful installation and to help protect your computer against security threats.
