My two year old figured out how to open my computer and decided to rip off 14 keys, I have all the keys and some brackets most of those black squishy things are gone except 3. How much will it cost to repair?

you can buy an external keyboard that plugs into your laptop for about £9 from tesco or asda

If your computer is under warranty, you can just send it in for repairs. They'll do it, you'll get it back, the end. No charges.

That's going to be a problem (and most warranties don't cover 'abuse' which is what they'd probably think has happened). If the rubber domes have been ripped off then you are going to need a new keyboard (can't just push the key back on like you could if the key had just been pulled off), if the scissor mechanism (which might be what you call the brackets) has been removed it can be very hard to put it back together to the point at which it'd be new keyboard time. For a laptop I wouldn't be surprised if they charged you a couple of hundred to fix it (cost of new keyboard and cost of labour), plugging an external USB keyboard in would also work but would kind of defeat the purpose of having a laptop.

The "black squishy things" are more than a pain in the butt to put back on. The brackets and the buttons aren't much easier. The best way to fix it is buy a new keyboard (bout $20 on ebay) and replace it yourself. 99.9999% of the time, this is easily replacable with a #2 and #1 phillips-head screwdriver, and a prying wedge (such as a small flathead screwdriver) for any facades that cover the screws. The last time I worked on a compaq, the facade at the top just above the keyboard pops off (look for a small dent just off the panel where you can use the flathead to pry off the facade, not too hard, but very firm.) Use the screwdriver, take off the keyboard. It probably has a ribbon cable going from the keyboard into the motherboard, which should simply slide out. To replace, just go backwards through the steps. Of course, you could buy it and run it down to the local computer shop (best buy will charge you $200, mess it up, the sell you a warranty on their crappy work). Local shops usually will do this pretty cheap. I used to charge about $20-25

Between the two, I would say you should go for 615DX. Aside from the higher processor speed and storage capacity, it's also installed with windows 7 (211DX has vista). If you have more options I would recommend you go for other brands. I do some repairs for laptops and HP/Compaq units tend to heat more than normal. I don't have much experience with the CQ60 series but I got one client with burnt motherboard and the processor was damaged too. Another thing is that the heatsink for CQ60 is buried deep inside the base so in case it needs cleaning (remove accumulated dust to prevent overheating), you need to open the whole base. I am currently using Dell Inspiron 1545 and it seems to have a good thermal design. The temperature is OK and they designed it so you can have an easy access to the heatsink in case it gets dusty (there's a door at the bottom of the base). Same is true with the older model 1525 and maybe (just maybe) the other models have the same design too.

Ok, so my Compaq laptop charger broke and i need a new one. the laptop is not a newer one but it's not super old either. I have noooooo idea what year it is but taking a random guess, it's probably somewhere around 2007 or so? I'm looking at some on e-bay and i want to make sure before i buy it, it's the same charger.

Find the name of your laptop and you can look it up easier instead of just randomly guessing manufacturing dates (though I don't understand why that would matter). The name of the laptop can be found by right-clicking my computer or by looking at the laptop itself (could also be located on the bottom). You can look online on sites like ebay or amazon but I would personally suggest you visit Topmic instead. Topmic is well known for their great services and their durable products. They include free shipping and free lifetime warranty. Yes, lifetime. This means if the charger ever stops working on its own for whatever reason, they would replace it as many times as needed at no additional cost, for life. My laptop shows black screen when turned on and though fan and other lights turn up; it tries to start and crashes after 10 seconds and try again to start but falters; this problem has been going on from last year and half however always starts up after few tries by pressing F8 .i.e. safe mode. This time the problem came after 6 months; but it always start after few tries; however this time it is not showing any screen or XP window; what could be the possible problem and solution. Thank you.

My compaq laptop has started to make a weird rattle, almost like an electric fan?
It started last night but I thought it might just be overuse in the day so I turned it off. Now it's the next day and the rattle still persists. I figure its coming from the internal cooling fan. Is this dangerous?

Here is the breakdown, and no "a" is not obsolete nor is it the oldest either. The 802.11a is on 5,8ghz band. In many cases it will work better than the others as there is less interference in that range. All the others are on the 2.4 band b.g.n (n also may be dual banded and thus is actually a 2.4 and 5.8) there are routers for any of these. B is the slowest standard at 11mbs, G is at 54mbs, N can be 200 or above depending on the manufacturer. N is very nearly a finished standard but has not yet been "confirmed" - it should be shortly.

After he inserts the CD-R into his laptop to burn the music, the cd tray pops open and windows tells him to insert a disc into his drive. He tried calls Compaq(HP) and they told him he needs either HP or Sony discs. We both find Has anyone had this issue and how do you resolve it? I should point out he is using Windows Media player. Ryan He has also tried Musicmatch.

Hi, You would need to use a program that came with your pc that makes use of your webcam. Some Compaq laptops have the YouCam program installed, otherwise you can use it with skype or yahoo messenger. Firstly, just check if your webcam is recognized by the Operating System you are running. On Windows 7, right click on My Computer and click on properties > Click on Device Manager on the left pane > Go to Imaging devices and that should list your webcam. Hope this helps

The computer has 128 mg of ram, and I believe a 300-400mhz processor. Unfortunately all of the Linux distributions I have tried have resulted in a kernel panic.

Xubutu, its a verison of ubuntu meant for older computers and you only need 128mb of ram to install it! though you can't use the live cd due to your specs,,,

You can download the 90-105 meg. iso file and burn an image to CD using BurnCDCC then boot your computer from your optical drive. This is a live CD that runs entirely in ram so you can test your hardware with the operating system. If you like it you can install from the live CD whenever you are ready. I have tried several live CDs and have installed Open SUSE 10 and 11 on my laptop (which has 512 megs of ram). Puppy Linux does about everything the other distros can do (but much faster). You should be able to use Puppy Linux on your system with no trouble. It has a nice graphical interface and if it's installed you can download Open Office and many other apps. I have tried about six different versions of Puppy Linux and they all work very well for me. Hope this helps, Al

Get a Laptop, youngster/oldster! You can get an ipod cheaper than 140 and the laptop is way important!

Get a laptop, but watch out for Compaq they are not reliable, they overheat frequently, and they are just bad. Try getting either a better one that's not Compaq (will be more expensive) or if you have that set budget get a netbook.

Get a laptop, but watch out for Compaq they are not reliable, they overheat frequently, and they are just bad. Try getting either a better one that's not Compaq (will be more expensive) or if you have that set budget get a netbook.

I have a compaq laptop and it is going really slow. like when im not and on the internet the internet will sometimes it respond and sometime it wont respond but when I click and type things in sometimes it will hesitate,then it sometimes it will go slow!

You have got to much stuff on your computer, or youve got viruses x

back up the necessary files onto a portable hard drive, (the stuff you dont wana lose) format you hard drive do the long one not quick, this will wipe your hard drive clean, then boot up the computer with your os disk in and re install it, re install any drivers you need (make ure you make a backup of them if the installers are on your computer) then the software and games you want, lots of people will tell you to get this and do that but it takes a long time if you dont know wot you are doing and you risk doing more harm then good, this way it will deffinately work perfectly again and will take no longer then a day, as opposed to tryin loads of sollutions which "mite" fix it, they may not and it takin you 1 week + lol. also system mechanic that will allow you to de clutter and format memory(RAM), it also optimizes your internet connection (it does work i had ping of 500ms now get 100 - 200ms max) and malwarebytes is a good virus/trojan etc deleter incase you suffering from any of those in the future, also go to www.pingtest.net and you can see what your internet is giving you to all over the world, eg im in yorkshire england, my ping to california usa is 198ms, tht is how long it takes to send and receive a packet of information 8bytes i think

My Evo N410c had a weak battery so I ordered a new third party battery off the net. The new battery looks exactly like the old one including P/N and charges well but now my laptop runs really slowly when on battery power only. Is this a Compaq trick to stop you from using third party options and if so is there a solution?

You do really need to be using the same battery. Compaq designed the lappy and the battery for it. When they build the battery they have their laptop there to test against. I view it to like buying Duracell or a cheap version. Both do the job but Duracell are better for high powered stuff

I would strongly suggest you to use branded batteries, mainly of the same brand as the laptop. Using a different battery can damage your notebook, as now it is probably being run at a lower power than it should be. Send back the battery you have bought and ask your money back.

When the card reader is plugged in to your computer does it show up in "My Computer"? If not, have you changed anything about the way your other USB devices are plugged in? I have noticed that my card reader does not work when my scanner is plugged in to the same USB hub. Unplug the scanner and the card reader works fine. Don't know why ... but it happens. Could this be what's happening to your system? Hope this helps.

If it's not firing up automatically the driver may need to be updated.

Most likely the reason it isn't working is that the drivers that tell the computer how to use the webcam are either not installed, installed incorrectly, or are now broken, I would recommend checking the Compac website for drivers and installing them. If that doesn't fix the issue than it's probably a setting in Skype or your chat program, you can find more information on how to change those setting from the website of the chat you are using.

I have changed the sleep setting to 45 minutes. It shuts off like it is hibernating, but when I move the mouse to turn it back on it doesn't do anything. I have to push the power button and it says that windows is resuming. I am using windows vista.

An easy fix, while holding down Ctrl key, press the - key. If this gets too small, then opposite, Ctrl and +. But because your screen icons are larger also, you may need to reset the display resolution. On XP this is Start>Control Panel>Display>Settings There you'll find a slider bar to move... the larger the # (Like 1024x768) the more will fit on the screen. It's good to remember how to reset... it may continue to change itself occasionally.

you do have a prt sc button it is located as part of the FN buttons Look for your Insert button there should be some blue letters along with the word insert nwo when you want to take a screen shot press Ctrl + fn + insert, when you are ready to paste the image press ctrl V

Simplest answer is to get external speakers. USB-Powered Speakers CAN amplify sound, but usually not to the extent you seem to want. So your best bet just get some regular speakers that plug into the wall with adjustable volume levels.

Well, I used to have a Compaq laptop but I did not very much like it. One of the big problems was the problems your having now. So I got my Lenovo very good laptop and just came out. Well mine did. I fixed my problem. If you already maxed out the sound in the windows sound equalizer (accesible from control panel, sound), then that`s probably all that the laptop speakers can take. Laptop speakers are known to be not loud so if you need more volume you should hook up some external speakers to it and maybe an amplifier. Also make sure that there isn`t any volume button on the laptop that may be turned down. Hope that helped!

Does the Compaq F730US laptop come with a Vista installation CD?
Other laptops have a Vista installation CD that come along with them. However, the Compaq F730US laptop does not come with a Vista CD. Does anyone with a similar laptop get the Vista CD?

I has an HP desktop with Windows XP, it did not come with a CD with XP, I had to burn my own off a program that was on the computer. And HP bought compaq so i figure yours will be the same

If you have a computer, i would not suggest Vista, i dont realy like Vista because it works weird. just thought i would suggest that. :)

They come with a seperate partition in the hard drive, which will have the operating system in its original state, as it was when purchased. So if you want to do a new install of the OS, you would do it through that. However, it is always better to make a backup CD of the OS. The HP total care advisor which pops up when you start your laptop, will allow you to do that.

I have a compaq laptop and been using it for many years. I installed an anti-spyware software recently and it now asks for an admin password. I use XP pro. I tried the ctl+alt+del+del but no joy. Can anyone help?

I read that there have been issues or problems for HP/Compaq users when they installed Windows XP SP3. I have a Compaq Presario M2000 Notebook with Mobile AMD Sempron Processor 2800+. Should I wait to update or not update all? If I should, what do I need to backup?

You need to have the right Service Pack 3 drivers in order for it to work, which not everyone has. If there are known problems, avoid it all together. I wouldn't upgrade to SP3 though. XP is gone from the shelves and is slowly being phased out. Vista has taken over.

I have an old Compaq machine with Windows 2K installed on it. I do not remember the admin password, ence cannot log into the machine. I want to completely re-image this machine with XP Professional. I have an old Compaq machine with Windows 2K installed on it. I do not remember the admin password, ence cannot log into the machine. I want to completely re-image this machine with XP Professional. I don't care for the data, since I found this laptop sitting in my closet for over a year now. If you know and can share how I can achieve this, it will be highly appreciated. Thanks.

Just pop in the XP boot disk and this should get you started! But f you don't get that far, well, check the jumper and take off the little cover, that will clear the password.

Operating system has crashed or has corrupt start up files, use a set of system recovery disc made for the lap top and do a system repair or re install a new original operating system using the recovery disc set. If doing a full system install back up any thing of importance as this writes over every thing on hard drive and puts back to new factory OS. The recovery disc set can be ordered by model and serial number from Compaq customer support. Press F8 at start up to enter start options, press F2 at start up to enter set up, Windows XP does not have a built in system recovery/restore partition.

So, what happens when you boot it into Safe Mode? You know... you hit F8 when the Compaq logo goes away, then choose Safe Mode. Does it boot to a desktop then? Chances are, the computer is hitting a Blue Screen of Death Error at some point and the default setting in Windows is to restart the computer when that happens. It is possible to turn off this default setting from Safe Mode, so if the computer is actually experiencing a BSOD error, it will display on the screen so you can write down the details to find out EXACTLY what is causing it. Failing hard drives cause this kind of problem. Corrupt Operating Systems (from bad updates, etc) cause this kind of problem. Infected Operating Systems exhibit this kind of behavior. Incorrectly automatically updated hardware drivers can cause this kind of issue. So... first things first. Does it boot to Safe Mode? DVD drive in my Compaq Presario 1200us can't read anymore. I just makes a clicking sound kind of like a dead hard drive. Is this fixable? I've got another Presario that is almost identical with a working DVD drive and I want to swap them. How do I get the drives out in order to do this?

There should be a releasing clasp for the Drive on the underneath some models require you to unscrew something then press down and remove. Press it down and then push the drive up carefully of course!! Hope it helps! Dont forget to Thumbs people up!

If you bought the warranty at the same time you bought your computer then you already have it and it is almost certainly linked to the serial number on your computer which means you won't need any paperwork for it. You can call compaq and double check at 800-474-6836. If you didn't but a warranty at the time you bought the computer then you will want to contact 800-752-0900 and see if you can still buy the warranty. Hope that helps and good luck.

Why does my compaq laptop screen flicker black at start up?
I have Windows Vista (32bit) and every time I turn on my computer and log in, my screen flickers twice when everything is loading up. It only happens twice every time and after wards everything is fine. What can possibly be causing this though? Should I be concerned? Unfortunately disabling TMM didn't work :(

That happened to me too. I searched online and came up with this answer form a forum. I followed the steps in " Disable TMM" and it stopped vista making my screen flicker on startup. No never, Apple had patented the MAC OS so it would only run on its platform, this means there is no boxes saying MAC OS in big box stores. But you can run XP through BootCamp on a MAC.

It is not possible. The Mac OS requires specialized hardware and looks for a particular BIOS to run. Another option is to run Mac OS X on top of VMWare. See the link below for more information. Good luck!

Compaq laptop unable to find any wireless networks?
My compaq laptop, which is vista home premuim is unable to find and networks at all. Even though my other 3 laptops are able to connect to my router with absolutely no problem whatsoever. When i try to connect to the router, no networks are shown at all. But if i connect through ethernet then i will have internet. Any ideas on this? i tried restarting and everything,

Restarting usually won't help with a problem like this. Is your router able to have connections for more than three laptops, or desktops? If not, that's the problem. If it can, I suggest turning off your router for no less than 15 seconds, then reconnect your Compaq Laptop first. Then the other two after, if you find that the fourth consecutive laptop will not connect, you need to upgrade your router to a more powerful one. Double-click on the Connections shortcut down next to the clock on your screen. Try to connect to a "Wireless" network there. If all else fails, ask someone who is computer savvy, such as a teacher, or someone who has a lot of laptops. Best of luck to you, and Merry Christmas! -iKandon

I think your talking of the BIOS password. If so then removal of the CMOS battery and all other power supplies then a little wait will kill the BIOS password. The problem is that laptop CMOS batteries are not that easy to find and some are hard moounted to the board (bonded, where specialist equipment is needed to change them) to help with anti-theft devise.

Well, there's this little button above the tap zone for me, and when it's orange it's disabled and when I press to enable it turns white. Maybe that's it for you, too?

you cant, thats the big problem of laptops, they cant upgrate anything else than memory and harddrive, sometimes you can upgrate dvds and players. if your asking that because of gaming, laptops lack in gamming and are really expencive, try making your self a desktop for gamming, if your low on cash try buying 1 part at time, until you have a full pc for gaming. also if your having problem with graphics try downloading the new drivers for your video card. adding memory helps gamming but not that much

Compaq NX9010 (Pentium 4)
How can I reset my HP Compaq nx9010 laptop's bios back to factory settings?
I have a 15" HP Compaq NX9010 (Pentium 4) with the BIOS locked, cannot boot into setup, or to OS. HP Compaq NX9010 laptop! Bios factory settings, i've removed the CMOS battery, and it does NOT fix the issue.

Remove the CMOS battery AND the main battery, press the power button once, then let it sit for about ten to twenty minutes. Then put everything back.
2 :
You need a set of recovery disc and do a system repair or install a new OS. The recovery CD.'s can be ordered from http://www.hp.com by model and serial umber from HP.

Hi. Close to he CMOS battery is a small jumper. Once the batteries are removed move the jumper with needle nose pliers or a similar tool to the next position. This will discharge any capacitors that still hold voltage. Wait a few seconds then move it back. Replace the batteries and you will be at factory default settings.
